Meal Planning Habit Instilled Among Pinoy Moms

November 20, 2015

Is it possible to consistently prepare meals that are not only delicious but also healthy for the family? Apparently, it is.

MAGGI Sarap Sustansya Caravan, a five-day event that promotes tasty, affordable and heathy meal preparations among moms, is urging Filipino mothers to practice meal planning.

Meal planning takes discipline but once this practice becomes a habit among mothers, the rewards are greatly beneficial for the whole family.

First, meal planning helps save money. With a menu plan at hand, the trip to the grocery and the market becomes purposive. Impulse buys are also reduced. Buying in bulk is cost-efficient and planning the use of trimmings and leftovers eliminates food waste.

Secondly, a meal plan saves time. The great meal debates, whether internal or with family members, will no longer eat up valuable time. Likewise, there will no longer be moments of mad dashing and scrambling for a missing ingredient if your meals are planned in advance.

Lastly and more importantly, meal planning improves nutrition. By planning three meals, seven days a week, mothers will have more time to prepare dishes that have a healthy balance of Go, Grow and Glow foods. Meal preparation gives more thoughtful space for the family to consume fruits and vegetables consistently.

Moreover, meal planning with the kids encourages them to be more involved in the cooking process which has been shown to improve transmission of healthy eating habits and consumption of healthy meals.

The MAGGI Sarap Sustansya Caravan highly encourages the use of the Food Guide Pyramid and Pinggang Pinoy of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute as reference points for the meal planning activities of mothers.

The five-day event culminates in a meal planning challenge where the mothers are given a P300-peso budget to plan, buy, prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for a family of six. The meal planning challenge serves as a summary of all the lessons the participating mothers learned about putting up healthy, balanced and budget-friendly meals for the family.

Meal planning is a vital component of the MAGGI Sarap Sustansya Caravan. It promotes good practice and habit among mothers so they could prepare tastier and healthier, well-thought-of menus without hurting their budget. They become more conscious of the amount of nutrition they serve to kids and the whole family, Geetha Balakrishna, Food Business Executive Manager, stated.

The MAGGI Sarap Sustansya Caravan is slated to conduct a series of community tours nationwide in the upcoming months.
